Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed a rescue Labrador into their family after tying the knot in 2018. Now, a new tell-all book about the Sussexes has revealed the name of the pup and the special meaning behind it.
Royal correspondents Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote in their Sussex biography, “Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family,” that the royal couple gave their pooch the name Pula.
Pula is the currency of Botswana, which was where Prince Harry brought Markle during the early days of their relationship, People noted. The Setswana word “pula” translates to “rain,” something that is regarded as precious and a blessing as it hardly rains in the African nation.
In October last year, Markle’s little slip of the tongue revealed that the addition to the household was a “she,” although the name of the pooch remained a mystery, People reported. She said that people kept “getting her name wrong.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex flew to Botswana for the second time in August 2017 to celebrate the former “Suits” star’s 36th birthday. Within three months, the two were already saying “I love you” to each other. The visit to the land was repeated in the same year when Markle and Prince Harry got up close to the elephants as part of their work for Elephants Without Borders.
Botswana holds such a special place in the Sussexes’ hearts that when Prince Harry turned 35 last year, Markle went the extra mile to recreate their trip to the country in their backyard.
“It’s a place that means so much to them — and to Harry in particular — so Meghan wanted to bring that happy place to him on his day so she set up a tent, got sleeping bags, cooked dinner and recreated Botswana where they fell in love,” a source told the outlet.
Markle has long been championing the cause, becoming a patron of animal welfare group Mayhew in January last year. She adopted Bogart and beagle Guy, which was with her in Toronto.
Markle’s fondness for animals was also evident when she had tea with the Queen, who loves corgis. Prince Harry previously revealed that the dogs loved the star upon their first meeting.
Her son, Archie, also loves having furry friends around the house. “They make him laugh and are gentle with him,” a source said of Archie.
