As if we needed another reason to love Chris Evans.
The Captain America actor was just as moved as the rest of the world when he heard about Bridger, a six-year-old boy who stepped in front of his four-year-old sister to protect her from a dog attack. His act of bravery resulted in serious injury, requiring over 90 stitches to his face.
When asked by his parents about the attack, Bridger reportedly said, “If someone was going to die, I thought it should be me.” His aunt, Nicole, posted the young boy’s story to Instagram earlier this week, quickly gaining the attention of some pretty famous faces, including the Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo, Octavia Spencer, and Vanessa Morgan.
“I’m not an Avenger, but I know a superhero when I see one,” Anne Hathaway wrote in her own Instagram post. “I can only hope I’m half as brave in my life as you are in yours, Bridger. Wishing you an easeful recovery, and many cool looking rocks. Hey @markruffalo, do you need a teammate??”
Chris Evans took things one step further, sending Bridger a personal video message from Captain America that his aunt was also kind enough to share on Instagram on July 15. The message, which made this writer ugly cry, plays alongside a video of Bridger in full Captain America garb watching Evans’s response with his baby sister.
“Conversation with Captain America,” Nicole wrote in the caption. “There are no words. We are so, so thankful.”
“Captain America here. So I read your story. I saw what you did, and I’m sure you heard a lot of this over the last couple days, but let me be the next one to tell you, pal: You’re a hero. What you did was so brave, so selfless. Your sister is so lucky to have you as a big brother. Your parents must be so proud of you,” Evans said in his message. “I’m going to track down your address and I’m going to send you an authentic Captain America shield because, pal, you deserve it.”
“Keep being the man you are. We need people like you,” he continued. “Hang in there. I know recovery might be tough, but based on what I’ve seen, I don’t think there’s much that can slow you down.” He ended his message with his own Captain America salute to the little boy.
While Bridger seemed almost too excited by the actor’s message for words, his sister sure had an opinion. “I thought it was awesome,” she said after Evans signed off. Us, too.
