Manchester United teenage sensation Teden Mengi has hinted that he may make his first-team debut in their upcoming Premier League fixture against Southampton.
Mengi, who captains Man Utd’s Under-18 side, was earlier promoted to the senior squad after fellow center-backs Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones suffered injuries before, during the three-month coronavirus break. While the 22-year-old Tuanzebe is out for the rest of the season, Jones is not expected to return to training until later this month.
Since Premier League’s return, June, Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had limited options in defense as he has gone with Victor Lindelof alongside captain Harry Maguire in all the games with Eric Bailly as the only other fully fit recognized center-back in his squad.
Meanwhile, Mengi has played 14 games for the U23 side this season, captained in all the four FA Youth and his impressive performances have caught Solskjaer’s attention. Moreover, Mengi has further impressed the boss by captaining the academy side in their four FA Youth Cup games.
Ahead of Man Utd’s clash against Southampton, Mengi posted an hourglass emoji alongside hashtag #mufc, suggesting that he could well make his Man Utd’s senior debut during the game. The same tweet also had some of his best bits from the current campaign leaving the Man Utd fans hoping to watch him finally make his Man Utd debut after he was left as an unused substitute their Europa League clash against Astana last December.
After the Southampton game, Man Utd next take on Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and West in the next 11 days in the Premier League. Solskjaer certainly will want to have all his bases covered and Mengi’s recent social media posts have hinted that the teenager is there in Solskjaer’s plans for the next fortnight.
As of now, Man Utd are placed fifth in the Premier League table. However, they trail fourth-placed Leicester City by just a point and third-placed Chelsea by two points. With just three games left in the 2019-20 Premier League season, Solskjaer’s only aim is to finish in the top four to secure a Champions League spot for the next season.
If Man Utd fail to end the league among the top four sides, the only way they will be able to play the premier European tournament next campaign is by winning the Europa League next month.
