Former North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell is in trouble with the authorities. The 67-year-old was involved in an incident earlier this week, according to WRAL.

Hatchell hit a woman in Durham, North Carolina on Monday. An 89-year-old woman, Betty Colby, passed away from the incident on Wednesday.

The former coach is now facing a misdemeanor death by vehicle charge. She is also charged with an unsafe movement violation.

The authorities said that the crash happened at noon near O2 Fitness Center. During the investigation, the authorities found that Hatchell struck Colby in the parking lot.

After being hit by Hatchell’s car, Colby “fell backward and struck her head on the pavement,” the authorities said. They also said that speed nor alcohol was a factor in this incident.

The Gastonia, North Carolina native – who is one of the most successful women’s basketball coaches of all-time – was placed on leave on April 2nd, 2019 after there was an investigation into the culture of the program. Players alleged that Hatchell and three assistant coaches “used racially insensitive remarks and forced players to play while injured,” according to the Washington Post.

The Hall of Famer resigned on April 18th, 2019. She went 751-325 with the Tar Heels and was 1,023-405 in her coaching career, including a 272-80 record with the Francis Marion Patriots.
