Jordan police has said three tourists, a tourist guide, and a security officer were attacked in the incident. The force has said a man has been arrested. Video footage from the archaeological site shows one woman lying on the ground, with much blood around her, as someone presses a towel to her back. Another man sits nearby with an apparent leg wound.

Several other people can be seen helping those with injures at the scene.

A security source told Reuters three Spanish women were taken to hospital.

No further details were immediately available.

Jerash is a popular tourist destination and is located north of the capital Amman, it is known its large Roman ruins site.

Jerash is located just 35km from the Syrian border.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) currently advises against all but essential travel to within 3km of Jordan’s border with Syria.

The Foreign office state the threat of terrorism in the region is “very likely”.

At this stage the motive for the attack in unknown.
